Chris Steffen | Director of Operations

Chris Steffen was born in Rochester, New York, in 1969. After visiting Wyoming on their honeymoon, Chris’s parents fell in love with the state and relocated to northern Wyoming to purchase a ranch. Chris was raised on the family ranch, where he helped work cattle, farm fields, and developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the western lifestyle.

From a young age, hunting and fishing became central passions in Chris’s life. He spent countless hours exploring the Big Horn Mountains and the Cody area, building a lifelong connection to Wyoming’s wildlife and natural landscapes. Chris graduated from Rocky Mountain High School in 1987 before attending Northwest Community College for two years and later transferring to Montana State University to continue his education.

Although Chris initially pursued college studies, his path eventually led him toward a career in law enforcement. He joined the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy’s newly established Pre-Service Program and became the first civilian in Wyoming history to earn certification as a law enforcement officer, graduating with class 91C69.

In February 1992, Chris joined the Green River Police Department, where he built an exceptional 25-year career serving the community. During his tenure, he held numerous positions including Patrol Officer, Juvenile Detective, Patrol Corporal, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, and ultimately Chief of Police. In 2005, Chris graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. His service to the Green River community remains one of his proudest accomplishments.

After retiring from the Green River Police Department in November 2017, Chris joined the Muley Fanatic Foundation. Prior to becoming part of the organization, he volunteered extensively with the Southwest Wyoming Chapter, driven by a desire to give back to the outdoors he loved and support mule deer conservation efforts. He served on the Allocation Committee, eventually becoming Chairman, and later joined the banquet committee. Chris also served as co-chair and later chairman of the Southwest Wyoming Chapter.

Chris is a devoted family man who enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, Andrea, son Easton, and twin daughters Chloe and Clair. Whether camping, fishing, archery shooting, or hunting, the outdoors continue to play a major role in his family’s life. Chris is also a certified Wyoming Game and Fish Hunter Education Instructor, where he enjoys helping young and new hunters safely begin their outdoor journeys.

Most weekends, Chris can be found somewhere in Southwest Wyoming hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying the beauty of the outdoors alongside family and friends. His dedication to conservation, public service, family, and Wyoming’s outdoor heritage make him an invaluable member of the Muley Fanatic Foundation team.
